Wolff wants Red Bull alive?

Latest Episode | Cut To The Race Podcast

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has publically said that he would approve of an engine freeze if it meant Red Bull Racing could continue in Formula 1. Wolff said he understands Red Bull’s situation and will do all he can to help them out. What a nice chap.

Red Bull were left in a spot of bother when engine supplier Honda announced they would be pulling out of F1 at the end of the 2021 season as it meant they needed to find a new engine, which is harder than it sounds. Mercedes would likely be unwilling to supply their power unit to their closest rival on the grid, ruling them out, Ferrari was never a serious option leaving Renault as the only alternative, but given tensions between Red Bull and Renault in the past (Drive to Survive anyone) this was not an option Red Bull wanted to take. As a result of all of this, the best decision for Red Bull would be to buy Honda’s Milton Keynes factory and take over operations, keeping the previous Honda staff in place. Formulanerds previously reported on the Red Bull honda agreement as you can see below.

Have Honda and Red Bull reached an engine agreement?

To give themselves the best chance at staying competitive Red Bull have asked for an engine freeze leading into the 2022 season, a deal which many thought would be immediately rejected by rivals, but this news from Mercedes will boost Red Bull’s chances. Wolff has said “If engine freeze is necessary to keep Red Bull Honda alive then we will have to support it. All teams have to be together in Formula 1, and Red Bull’s project is ambitious. That’s why we are in favour of freezing.” An engine freeze has the potential to work in Mercedes favour too given their PU is currently the strongest on the grid, but Wolff made no mention of this in his statement.

There will likely be backlash from other teams on the grid, who don’t want an engine freeze, but this backing from Mercedes will certainly boost Red Bull as they move into the 2021 and 2022 seasons.
