Lewis Hamilton’s F1 contract expires at the end of 2023. With that in mind, many have been discussing whether he will announce his retirement from the sport then.

Dispute over Hamilton’s retirement

These rumours are working in over time at the moment after Daniel Ricciardo was seen exiting the Mercedes garage at the Singapore Grand Prix. Many fans believe that Ricciardo will sign with Mercedes as a reserve driver to replace Hamilton once he retires. Yet Mercedes Team Principal, Toto Wolff, is putting the retirement rumours to bed.

Motorsport Week are reporting Wolff’s comments to the Press Association, in which he said:

“I am absolutely certain that Lewis can win the eight world title with us. He is not going elsewhere, and if we can provide a car that is competitive and he can fight for wins, he is going to win more titles. For him, retirement is still far away.”

Hamilton narrowly missed out on an eighth world title in 2021 at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Yet Wolff is confident that more wins will come for him. But how much time does the Brit have left? One factor that Wolff discussed in relation to the seven-time world champion is his age.

Hamilton’s growth with Wolff and Mercedes

Hamilton is the second-oldest driver on the grid at the age of 37. Fernando Alonso, the oldest driver on the grid, is 41. Despite being one of the older drivers, Wolff is still confident that 2023 will not be the seven time champion’s last year in the sport. Drawing comparison to Alonso, Wolff said, “I have no doubt we will be extending [beyond 2023]. Look at Fernando Alonso. He is 41, and he is still mega so no doubt, there are many years left in Lewis.”

Wolff commented upon his relationship with Hamilton. The Mercedes-Hamilton partnership is not only the most successful in the history of F1, it’s also a close-knit one. Wolff shared:

“The advantage is we speak a lot together. Just last week we sat down and he says, ‘look, I have another five years in me, how do you see that?’ Over time we have just grown together. We are totally transparent with each other.”

He also went on to reveal that “[…] whatever we agree on a contract extension, which is going to happen.” Wolff is confident in Hamilton. Despite Hamilton being out of the running for the world championship this year, perhaps this powerful alliance can make a comeback in the future?
