Latest Episode | Cut To The Race Podcast

The talks concerning the second Mercedes seat are yet to be resolved as the summer break comes to an end. But, Toto Wolff has finally given a date as to when he will make his decision…

Many expected George Russell to be announced as a Mercedes driver at Silverstone, it didn’t happen.

Many expected the two-week gap between Silverstone and Hungary to be filed with an announcement, it didn’t happen.

Many expected the 3-week summer break would allow time for an announcement, it didn’t happen.

As we approach race week for the Belgium Grand Prix, it still hasn’t happened. No announcement, and not even so much as a hint from Toto Wolff as to his decision.

He has, however, confirmed that we won’t be receiving a decision before Spa. In an interview with bild.de Wolff revealed “We have to choose between stability of Valtteri and the talent of George, where the future lies. I want the matter to be settled in September so that they can both position themselves well for the coming season.”

It appears the Belgium GP at Spa will be crucial for VB, should he want to keep his seat. A task made all the more difficult by his 5-place grid penalty. The Mercedes car having a significant performance reduction when it’s running in traffic.

Expect a decision in the coming weeks, and keep checking Formulanerds social media for all the up to date information!
