Why Alfa Romeo did not sign Schumacher: “Ferrari decided differently”

Latest Episode | Cut To The Race Podcast

2021 will see the Schumacher name return to the Formula 1 grid, in the form of 7-time world champion Michael’s son Mick, who takes a seat at Ferrari customer team Haas. But was Mick originally destined for Alfa Romeo, who after all, he was meant to complete an FP1 session with in 2020?

Schumacher, a graduate of the Ferrari young driver programme is one of the hottest prospects in the sport after winning the F2 championship in 2020, but with Haas’ poor form of late, would Alfa have been the better option for him? Regardless, the decision was out of his control, and it was seemingly out of Alfa’s control too, with team principal Jan Monchaux saying: “There was certainly a thought. But we don’t decide whether Mick will get a chance with us.” Monchaux added ““In the end, Ferrari decided differently. Ferrari and Alfa. Certainly also has reasons with the sponsorship. The brand Alfa, who might prefer an Italian in the car” This latter part is a very clear hint that Ferrari wanted Italian Antonio Giovinazzi in the car in 2021, no surprise given Ferrari’s Italian heritage.

The knock on effect of this of course means Callum Ilott does not have a much deserved seat for the 2021 season, the Brit being Ferrari’s official test and reserve driver for the 2021 season, along with some duties in the GT World Challenge series. The Alfa Romeo is expected to be quicker than the Haas in 2021, so it is likely Mick will be struggling at the back of the field for much of the season, with all hope placed on the regulation changes in 2022.

Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto has hinted he hopes to have Mick in the Ferrari in 2023, which of course begs the question of where Sainz goes next, but nevertheless the future looks bright for the young German.
