Who was the naughtiest driver in 2020? Penalty points revealed

Latest Episode | Cut To The Race Podcast

The 2020 season was a season like no other. The #weraceasone campaign brought the drivers closer together off track, but on track was a very different story. Drivers have to race quickly, but fairly, and some drivers fail to find the balance between fast and furious. Below we take a look at the naughtiest drivers of the 2020 season, looking at who picked up the most penalty points across the 17 race season.

Somewhat surprisingly, Alex Albon picked up the most penalty points across the 2020 season, with 7 added to his licence. These points came from a wide range of incidents including: A collision with Kevin Magnussen at Silverstone, pushing Romain Grosjean off the track at Monza, missing the bollard at Sochi and a Nurburgring incident with Daniil Kvyat. Alex finds himself out of a race seat in 2021 after being dropped by Red Bull, but he would have had to be seriously careful if he was racing in 2021, as these points carry over.

The second place drivers are also a surprise, with George Russell and Lewis Hamilton both picking up 6 penalty points each. Hamilton actually got to within 2 points of a ban at one stage, but the stewards decided to reverse the decision they made to punish him for his incorrect practice start procedures in Russia. Prior to that he had picked up four in the season-opening Austrian Grand Prix for failing to slow under yellow flags and later crashing into Albon. He also picked up a penalty by entering a closed pit-lane in Monza. Russell meanwhile picked up three penalty points from two incidents at Silverstone and Istanbul Park after ignoring yellow flags and even double-yellow flags.

Lando Norris was next with 5 penalty points, so all 3 British drivers make up the 3 of the top 4!

8 drivers finished the season on 0 penalty points, including Valtteri Bottas, Max Verstappen and Sebastian Vettel (Vettel topped the points register in 2019 so he clearly worked on his behaviour over the winter!)

I wrote another article (below) showing the drivers beginning the 2021 season with penalty points, so be sure to check that out to see how many drivers will have their 2020 points carried over and to see how and where each driver picked up points in 2020.
