Fred Vasseur has spoken about the upcoming 2024 season, admitting that Ferrari won’t be thinking about 2025 “at all”, which is when Lewis Hamilton is joining the Scuderia.

Earlier this year, Lewis Hamilton announced that he would be leaving Mercedes and driving for Scuderia Ferrari in 2025. With the news of the announcement, the future of Carlos Sainz is unclear as 2024 is now his final year racing in red.

Many have taken the news of Hamilton joining Ferrari to mean that the Maranello-based outfit is more focused on what lies ahead rather than the present. However, Team Principal, Fred Vasseur, has made it clear that Ferrari are not thinking about the future at the moment.

Pre-season testing is this week with the first round of the 2024 season next weekend. Vasseur has told media, as reported by, that for Ferrari, the priority is very much 2024. He is adamant this season is not one to brush off and is instead one to help better the team.

Vasseur’s comments

Speaking on the matter, Vasseur said: “No, this is wrong, 2024 won’t be a transition year. It’s a quite important season for us and I’m fully focused on this. I think the best way to prepare something is to do a good job.

“It means that we are focused on ’24, we want to get the best, we want to win races, we want to continue on the path of 2023, and we won’t be at all thinking about 2025.”

Ferrari’s Team Principal continued, highlighting how the team will build on 2023 – a season where they were the only team to win a race besides Red Bull. Vasseur said:

“If you have a look at last year, we have a very positive evolution all over the season. But we had some stages of the season when Charles was performing a bit more, when Carlos was performing a bit more.

“Into the recovery of the team, between the first part and the last part, I think the drivers played a decent role. We need to have this kind of evolution in a racing team. And we are there today.

“For sure, we want to have more, we want to push more, it’s the DNA of our racing team. But honestly, I’m really convinced that we will have this kind of positive evolution again in ’24. And this will be very helpful to continue to improve.”

Vasseur also commented on the “mindset of continuous improvement.” He has made strides within Ferrari since joining the team, hiring new personnel. However, he has admitted that there is always more to be done.

“I would say that by DNA, if you start to be happy with what you have, you are dead. It means that you need to be always in the mindset of continuous improvement, to try to work on your weaknesses, and to try to step on some areas.

“And so, it’s a no-end project. For sure people are starting to join the team now, and this is good news. It’s day after day, I think we are reinforcing the team, we are making steps.

“But again, it’s not that tomorrow morning I will say now we are there, I’m happy with the situation. If you start to have this kind of approach, I think it’s the beginning of the end.”

Pre-season testing will give us our first indication as to how the teams will perform in the opening stages of the season. Ferrari finished third in the Constructors’ Championship in 2023, but with Vasseur’s goal of always improving they could have a better season this year.
