Formula One’s 2023 season is five races in with Max Verstappen and Red Bull dominating both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships. The fight in the midfield has looked stronger than previous years with a lot of the teams closer together in terms of performance, and no clear-cut backmarkers.

One team who has seen improvements is MoneyGram Haas. The American outfit brought back Kevin Magnussen for the 2022 season after parting ways with Nikita Mazepin. In his returning season to F1, Magnussen scored pole position over the sprint weekend in Brazil.

This year, the Dane is partnered with Nico Hulkenberg, who has returned after three years out of a full-time seat. With two experienced drivers at the helm, Haas has seen some improvements already in the first five races.

Currently, Haas are P7 in the championship on eight points, just six points behind Alpine, who are in sixth. This is already a place above where the team finished after the entire 2022 season.

Last time out in Miami, Haas achieved their best qualifying of this season. Whilst Hulkenberg qualified 12th, Magnussen qualified on the second row in P4 for the team’s home race.

Over the Miami Grand Prix weekend, Haas did bring some upgrades to help improve performance. These upgrades did demonstrate their benefits as Magnussen was able to score a point after finishing P10.

However, there is more to come from the American team.

Steiner’s Comments

Speaking on the Miami Grand Prix weekend, Guenther Steiner, Team Principal of Haas, admitted that it “was the busiest race ever” for the team. He explained saying: “All our partners, sponsors, on-track action and all that was happening seemed to be the most eventful race weekend since Haas started.”

Steiner did note that for the team it was a good weekend and the upgrades did what they wanted them to do. The Team Principal commented:

“All in all, it was a very good weekend. Everybody seemed to be happy, the Miami Grand Prix put on a good show for the fans, for the teams, and we got a point.

“The upgrade which we brought to the race track is working. So well done to the whole team to get this developed, produced and put it in action for Miami.

“We’ve got more coming this year, we said we’re bringing little steps, we’re not bringing one big upgrade package.

“We’re bringing something new to Imola and when we find something in development, we will bring it to the track.”

The Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix is the race at which many teams, including Mercedes, were planning to bring upgrades. However, Formula One announced today that the race has been cancelled due to extreme weather. Therefore, any further upgrades will have to wait until the next race.

Present objective of 2023

With a strong weekend in Miami, and eight points already scored, Steiner has explained that the objectives are for Haas this season. The Team Principal said:

“We’re in a good position now and we just try to get stronger and stronger, and we will.

“The present objective this year is to move up in the Constructors’ Championship from last year, getting better every year – it’s as simple as this – and at some stage we want to be winning races.

“I don’t know how far away it is and I’m not going to say it’s this season or next season, but at some stage, it will happen with Haas.”

With 18 rounds left of the season and more upgrades to be brought, will Haas be able to fight Alpine and McLaren in the championship? Will the American team finish in the top five?
