Carlos Sainz has been driving for Ferrari since 2021, but now, his future is unknown as Lewis Hamilton takes his seat for 2025. However, there isn’t a lack of options for the Spanish driver.

The seven-time World Champion, Lewis Hamilton, took the entire Formula One community by surprise by leaving Mercedes. Hamilton has been part of the Mercedes family for 11 years, but for 2025, he will be leaving the Silver Arrows for Ferrari. Before Hamilton’s announcement, Charles Leclerc renewed his contract with Ferrari. This only added to the speculation surrounding Carlos Sainz’s future.

During the 2023 season, there were many rumours regarding Sainz’s contract extension. With the news that Audi would be joining Formula One, the Spaniard was rumoured to potentially be switching teams. These rumours intensified during during the Monaco Grand Prix weekend, but Ferrari’s Team Principal, Fred Vasseur and even Sainz himself dismissed these rumours.

His outstanding win in Singapore made him the only non-Red Bull driver to win in 2023. This gave Ferrari their first win of the season and it put an end to the rumours of a replacement with many thinking Ferrari and Sainz was a long-term partnership.

However, that is not the case. Whilst 2024 sees the same grid as last season, 2025 currently sees Sainz without a seat.

After Hamilton’s announcement, Sainz shared on social media his thoughts and said he will “part ways” with Ferrari at the end of 2024, but “will give his absolute best” for the season ahead.

What are Sainz’s options for 2025?

But where does Sainz go moving forward? According to Formula 1 journalist, Lawrence Barretto, many teams have shown interest in Sainz.

First up, Mercedes. A straight swap between the two teams would probably be the best option for Sainz. A seat in a team that dominated between 2014 and 2020 is a clear top spot for the Spaniard.

George Russell and Sainz would be a driver pairing to look out for. With Russell’s speed and hunger for victory, plus Sainz’s skilful drive and experience, Toto Wolff would have the perfect mix.

Speaking on Wolff, Barretto has also revealed that there have been “multiple conversations” between the Spaniard’s management and the Mercedes Team Principal. Wolff also praised Sainz over the course of the Singapore Grand Prix. He told Sky Deutschland:

“It was at an incredibly high level. It shows the momentum he has had since the summer break. Hats off to Carlos Sainz.”

Aston Martin

Aston Martin have been a team with a vision for the future. The Silverstone-based outfit gave us a demonstration of their determination in the 2023 season, where they finished fifth with 280 points. This is a significant improvement from 2022, where Aston Martin just managed to score 55 points and get seventh place.

Aston Martin managed to get on the podium eight times last year with Fernando Alonso and they could have done many more if it wasn’t for Red Bull and Max Verstappen’s dominance and the mid-season roadblock they hit with their car’s development.

An experienced Sainz would be a perfect addition to the team. With big plans for the future, Aston Martin needs a driver who can deliver results and help the team progress further. Additionally, Aston would be a great option for Sainz as the team has already shown they mainly focus on the most experienced driver.

Currently undergoing a rename, the team has bigger plans ahead. The 2026 season will see Sauber transform into Audi. The Spanish driver has been a strong contender for a seat on this team. Many rumours sparked on this topic, with Carlos Sainz Sr., who recently won Dakar with Audi, even speaking on the matter.

“Audi is always a guarantee of success, after all, I know how seriously they take every project. We all know that Formula 1 is a special world, and I have a lot of respect for Audi, explains,” explains Carlos Sainz Sr. “In my opinion, it’s only a matter of time before they succeed in F1. I don’t have a crystal ball, but at the moment Audi decides to enter F1, they already inspire a lot of respect in me. Of course, it makes sense for Carlos to talk about what Audi can achieve, especially since I am a member of the Audi family,”

Going to Sauber in 2025 and staying with them through their transition to Audi would be a logical move for Sainz.

Red Bull

The reigning champion team had an almost perfect season in 2023. Their dream season was interrupted by Sainz’s win at Singapore.

Sergio Perez was voted as most likely to defeat Verstappen, his teammate, at the start of the season. This hope disappeared when Max went on to win the next 17/18 races, leaving Perez winless and struggling. With the Mexican’s contract ending in 2024, the team might look for options to replace him.

Carlos has worked with Red Bull before. He began his Formula 1 career with Red Bull’s sister team, Toro Rosso back in 2015, partnering up with Verstappen.

Now that Carlos is out of contract, he is the perfect candidate for the Milton Keynes-based team.

What will happen to Sainz?

This question can only be answered by Sainz himself. Even though his future is extremely uncertain, a driver of Sainz’s level won’t be left without a team. He has the skills, the experience, and the desire to prove a point, which makes him a perfect candidate for any team.
