Norris has been driving for McLaren since 2019 when he joined Formula 1. In 2024 he will enter the sixth season of his career. With 13 podiums and a pole position, he has proven himself to be one of the best current drivers on the grid. His talent behind the wheel and raw speed attracted the attention of many top teams like reigning champions Red Bull Racing.

Red Bull’s team principal, Christian Horner, even admitted the team’s interest in Norris and questioning the performance of his current team on the latest season of the Netflix documentary series “Drive to Survive”.

“I think Lando’s one of the most talented drivers on the grid. In the right car, he would be a winning driver. No doubt about that,” said Horner.

“Can his career take another year of being in the doldrums? A driver’s career has a finite amount of time to it and he needs to make the right decisions for him at the end of the day.

“We’d certainly be interested in him. if he’s delivering, he’s not going to be short of choices. He’s got to make sure he makes the right choice.”

Norris’ decision

But the decision is ultimately made by one person, and that one person is Norris.

The British driver has committed his future to McLaren F1, renewing his contract that expired at the end of 2025. The news of this new deal came out to the public less than a week before the shocking news of Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari.

With the F1 market scrambled by this significant move, Norris was questioned about his decision, to which he confidently answered “No, I’m very happy. I could have waited; I had the choice.

“I knew opportunities were potentially coming my way. I knew what opportunities I had at the time, last year and coming into this year and what could have happened or what is happening over the next couple of years anyway. So, no regrets from any side.”

With McLaren’s recovery during the 2023 season, the British team seems to finally be back to fighting for positions at the front of the grid, entering the 2024 season with much more positive expectations than in 2023. Apart from building a new wind tunnel, the team has new members like former Ferrari engineer, David Sanchez and Rob Marshall, Red Bull’s chief engineer officer.

“I’m confident in my team and confident in what we’ve been able to achieve and what we can achieve going into the future. I’m very happy with where I am,” Norris continued.

“Of course, I could be happier if we were achieving more of the goals that I think we all want to achieve. But the main point is: I’m enjoying my time with the guys that I’m with. For me, that’s always a big part of my life – I want to enjoy where I am.

“I think that’s an important part of trying to improve as a team at the same time and knowing everyone and pushing everyone. Everyone’s capable of getting to the goal of being the top team in Formula 1. So, very happy.”
