No Sprint race for Silverstone in 2022

Latest Episode | Cut To The Race Podcast

Silverstone is not being considered to host a sprint in 2022, despite hosting the first sprint race of last season.

An F1 source told The Daily Mail that the British Grand Prix will not host a Sprint this season. Other tracks like Bahrain, Imola, Austria and Brazil are on the list.

Formula One chief Stefano Domenicali is hoping to take sprint races elsewhere. They have considered simulations for which tracks will provide the most on-track action in a sprint race.

F1 will be willing to pay a premium for this additional action.

There has been a lot of speculation about the future of the format, with a number of differing reports emerging since the end of last season.

It is believed that there will only be three sprint races this season, as opposed to the initially proposed six. Teams are still arguing with Formula One over the budget caps and how these change with the addition of sprints.

Red Bull, Mercedes and Ferrari have indicated that they would only consider doubling the number of sprint races to six if the cost cap was raised by $2.65 million.

The other teams see no difference between having a sprint race and having a third free practice, and so see no need to raise the cap.

There are other variations proposed to the format by Domenicali. This includes giving pole to the fastest in qualifying as opposed to the winner of the sprint race, and for points to be awarded further down the order.

We await any official confirmation around the sprint races for 2022. This should come after the F1 Commission meeting on February 14th.
