Nico Hulkenberg has made no secret of his desire to return to F1 in 2022. However, it seems he is slowly accepting this door is closing, as he opens talks with an IndyCar team for 2022.
The German is reportedly in talks with Ed Carpenter Racing. He is of course the Aston Martin reserve driver for 2021 and is linked with Williams and Alfa Romeo for 2022, but an across the pond destination is looking increasingly likely.
It is understood Hulekenberg’s contract may echo the one of Romain Grosjean, in the sense that he will only drive the road and street races, not ovals.
Teams are looking at Hulkenberg, largely due to his wealth of experience, which could be crucial heading into the new 2022 regulations. This, on paper, would be perfect for a team like Alfa Romeo. If Kimi Raikkonen retires, Hulkenberg can step in and fulfil the ‘experience’ role, with Giovinazzi presumed to be keeping the second seat.
No one knows who will end up where at the end of 2021, and that is the beauty of motorsport. We now wait and see…
