Leclerc offers Russell some words of wisdom ahead of Mercedes switch

Charles Leclerc has offered some words of advice for George Russell ahead of the Brit’s move to Mercedes next season.

Russell – who made his Formula 1 debut in 2019 and is part of the Mercedes driver programme – has spent his three years in the sport so far with backmarkers Williams.

But next season, he will partner seven-time world champion, Lewis Hamilton, at the Silver Arrows.

Leclerc was in a similar position himself in 2019  and after spending one year at Sauber, he joined multi-time world champion Sebastian Vettel at Ferrari and beat the German in both seasons as his teammate.

Speaking from his experience, Leclerc offered Russell some words of wisdom regarding a move to a big team.

“To George, I don’t have much to say,” said Leclerc, as quoted by f1.com.

“He knows what he needs to do. It’s an amazing opportunity for him and he’s in a very good position too, because being like I was with Seb at the end, I had a multi-world champion next to me and, of course for us being young, it’s a great opportunity to show what you can do and learn from the best.

“So yes: just to enjoy his time there and not put too much pressure on himself.”

Vettel also offered some advice for Hamilton about competing with a young and hungry teammate.

“I don’t know, Lewis is old enough, he doesn’t need much advice,” said Vettel.

“Every situation is different as well; yes, I think if you get to race with a new teammate, you always get stuff you get to learn on both sides as well.

“It was like that when Charles joined the team and looking back I enjoyed [it], I’ve always been quite open and straightforward, and I learned a similar way of working from Charles as well so it was quite straightforward between us, which was nice.”
