After a dry period, crazy conditions caused freaky flooding at the Francorchamps circuit.

Terrible thunderstorms tore through the track and tunnels. So much for the first day of the Spa Euro Race.

Séverine Cirlande, circuit communication officer, said, “These bad weather caused significant flooding between the Source bend and the Raidillon, resulting in the end of activities on the circuit. the track having been impacted, the Spa-Francorchamps circuit and the Royal Automobile Club of Spa have decided to end the Spa Euro Race meeting, in order to ensure everyone’s safety.”

Cars from the Legend Cars Cup, Lotus Cup Europe, the Supercar Challenge / GT & Prototype Challenge, and Belcar Endurance Championships were able to have practice and qualifying sessions. Then the violent winds and water took over.

The Malmedy municipalities are dealing with the dreadful downpours.

The Spa-Francorchamps Circuit and Royal Automobile Club of Spa are trying to resolve the water worries in hopes to resume scheduled sessions. There is significant track damage from the massive mudslides.

The mayor of Stavelot, Thierry de Bournonville believes that the Rohon, a tributary of the Red Water was the source. What a  devastating disaster.

Spa-Francorchamps is on the Formula 1 race calendar for the weekend of August 27 to 29. Recently, restrictions relaxed in Belgium. The circuit is aiming to allow 75,000 sports spectators.
