Hamilton: “No games” with Bottas

The Finn is "a straight shooter"

Latest Episode | Cut To The Race Podcast

You can say a lot about the Mercedes duo. You could say that Valterri Bottas is an obvious wingman for seven time world champion Lewis Hamilton. But Hamilton has revealed that there are “no games” between the pair, calling the Finn “a straight shooter”.

In an interview set up by Mercedes for Formula One before the season opener in Bahrain, the duo asked each other some fairly honest questions. Bottas kicked it off by asking Hamilton: “What’s the best thing about being my team mate? No bull****? Not too much chatting?”

“If you’re putting words in my mouth, then there’s no BS!” replied Hamilton. “I don’t think there’s one specific thing that’s better than the other; I think it’s a combination of many things and it is a fact that there are no games between us. You’re a straight shooter. Because then it’s just down to our hard work.

“There are weekends we could do better, like in Austria [2020] for example, and we know we both just have to do a better job when the other comes out ahead on the weekend.”

Bottas won in the 2020 season opener, while Hamilton finished 4th, after being slammed with a penalty for a collision with Red Bull’s Alex Albon. The pair have given team boss Toto Wolff quite the headache over the past few years. But Hamilton claims that the 2020 season opener in Austria was nothing compared to the 2016 season, when he partnered Nico Rosberg.

“The angriest I ever seen Toto, it would have been one of the times Nico and I crashed into each other…” said Hamilton.“Probably Barcelona’s probably the angriest he ever got.” When asked by Bottas if Wolff was “fuming”, Hamilton jokingly said: “Yeah definitely saw bald patches he pulled out of his hair, had to get some turf and grow it back!”

For Bottas, the saga of Hockenheim 2019 was a race where he saw the rath of his boss. The team were celebrating a milestone in the sport, and everyone dressed up in 1950’s outfits, hoping for a great result. But it was probably the most embarrassing weekends for Mercedes. After qualifying pole and third, Hamilton claimed 9th at the chequered flag and Bottas retired after a messy Sunday.

Why Valtteri Bottas won’t win a world title

“I was just thinking about it. He wasn’t so happy in Germany 2019,” said Bottas.

“I was going to get at least some points, and then I shunted. We were all wearing these special outfits and I remember… Toto said after the race that that’s the last time we’re going to play carnival at a race weekend.”

The Mercedes duo head to Imola this weekend, wary of the Red Bulls, despite winning in the Bahrain season opener.

The pair head to Imola for the second race of a season in which Red Bull have shown their might, Verstappen having taken pole at Bahrain only to lose out to Hamilton on race day. They’ll be hoping to keep Team Principal Wolff smiling with more valuable points in what looks like being a tough championship fight.
