Eduardo Freitas is set to make his F1 race director debut soon.

Despite Niels Wittich covering the first five races this season, he will become the deputy in Spain.

Freitas will take on the main role for Barcelona and Monaco. The duo will alternate race director and deputy director positions through the year.

On occasion, there have been clashes with Freitas’s other motorsport commitments. When this occurred, FIA veteran, Colin Haywood stepped up as deputy director alongside Wittich. Niels took a straightforward approach which has been appreciated by teams.

McLaren Team Principal, Andreas Seidl said, “From my point of view the new set-up with Niels and also Eduardo had a very good start going into this new era of F1. And at the same time, he is always available for a dialogue and for constructive input as well, if you think things need to be reconsidered. And from this point of view, when I look now how these first races went, I think we are in a good place.

It’s noted that Wittich favours using a virtual safety car before calling for a full safety car. It came as a surprise during Lando Norris’ unfortunate accident. There was tons of damage and debris on track in Miami.

Also some drivers expressed frustration relating to the FIA International Sporting Code on banning jewellery and unsuitable underwear.

Eduardo emerged in motorsport as a mechanic. His passion began with motorcycles before a transition to karting in 1979. The Portuguese pushed forward from track marshal to race director. He has experience in FIA GT, ETCC and FIA GT1 as well as WEC and Le Mans Series in Europe and Asia.

Eduardo’s earned his spot at the top. Barcelona should be a simple start and then maybe logistic challenges in Monaco.
