In a statement released on Monday, the governing body announced that it had approved Andretti Formula Racing’s bid to join F1. The decision came after a lengthy assessment process, carried out by the FIA in what it has described as a “robust process of due diligence”. Following the initial call for Expressions Of Interest back in February, four applicants proceeded to “Phase 2” of the decision-making process.

Of the four applicants, only Andretti has been successful. The FIA stated that all applicants were assessed on their “sporting and technical ability”, among their ability to “raise and maintain sufficient funding”. In addition to these factors, applicants were assessed on “sustainability and positive societal impact criteria”, in which each team was required to demonstrate how they “intend to achieve a positive societal impact” via their participation in F1. Hitech, Rodin Carlin and the Asian racing bid LKYSUNZ all recently found out that they had been unsuccessful.

Following the FIA’s decision, Andretti now proceeds to the next stage of the process. Andretti’s submission turns to Formula One Management, for the purpose of commercial discussions. Should an agreement be reached smoothly, Andretti could be on the F1 grid as soon as 2025.

Formula 1, in response to the FIA’s decision, has stated: “We note the FIA’s conclusions in relation to the first and second phases of their process and will now conduct our own assessment of the merits of the remaining application.”

Statement from FIA President

In an official statement, FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem stated: “Andretti Formula Racing LLC was the only entity which fulfils the selection criteria that was set in all material respects. I congratulate Michael Andretti and his team on a thorough submission. I also want to thank all prospective teams for their interest and participation.”

He continued, “The Expressions of Interest process builds on the positive acceptance of the FIA’s 2026 F1 Power Unit Regulations among existing OEMs which has also attracted further commitment from Audi, Honda and Ford and interest from Porsche and General Motors.”

Ben Sulayem added, “I would like to thank all of the FIA team members involved in the Expressions of Interest process for their tireless efforts in ensuring a diligent assessment of all of the applications received.”
