The 2023 F3 season has seen a vast amount of new young talent climb into the championship. Almost all the F3 teams this season have at least one rookie in their lineup. Hitech has brought in a full rookie lineup this season with young bright stars like Luke Browning, Gabriele Mini and Sebastian Montoya who all have had excellent campaigns in other series’ throughout their racing careers so far.

Campos Racing have also put their faith into two rookies this season, Christian Mansell and Hugh Barter joined the Spanish team at the start of this year. Already having a strong driver in the third seat, Josep Marti in his second season has been a great example for the rookies to learn from with him currently sitting second in the standings.

FormulaNerds caught up with the team principals of Campos Racing and Hitech ahead of the British Grand Prix to hear their views on why they opted for rookies with less experience and how the team is getting these drivers up to speed in the F3 world. Both the team principals were in unison about the fact that rookies shouldn’t be underestimated.

Adrian Campos Jr.’s thoughts

‘To be honest, it has been proved several times that even if they are rookies, if they are good, they can fight straight away for the championship.

“In the past, we have seen guys like George Russell, Leclerc and Piastri, they won everything straight away. For the team at the start, especially, it’s a bigger challenge because you need to really spend time and involve a lot of time with them, especially in the first part of the year in the winter and the preparation to give them as much information as possible.

“Thanks to their talent, they are able to cope immediately with the lack of experience, we were confident to sign with two rookies for the season.’ said the team principal Adrian Campos Jr.

Hitech’s team principal Oliver Oakes chipped in with his thoughts on his all-rookie lineup this season:

‘Although they might look like a rookie, they’re quite experienced before they get to F3. I have Gabriele [Mini], who did two years at FRECA, so we knew he was quite mature, although he needs to get some more points on the board.

“We also have Sebas [Montoya] who has just done one year of FRECA, he is a typical red bull driver who needs to perform as a rookie.

“With Luke [Browning] we are aware of his experience in Hitech and British F4. I think it is interesting to see the mix of lineups, I think it will be an exciting summer, and we are hoping the rookies progress. When you back to circuits where some [drivers] have knowledge from previous years before it hopefully will help them deliver.’

The rookies this season in F3 have definitely shown they don’t need the experience to perform. Four out of the top 5 in the overall standings are rookies, with 18-year-old Gabriel Bortoleto leading the championship and Gabriele Mini sitting in 5th with 65 points so far. The season is nowhere near done just yet and anything can happen in the remaining rounds.
