In the press conference after the race, Sargeant said the podium took “longer than expected”, due to his pace in his rookie season so far.

getting up to speed

It’s been a season of learning so far for Sargeant and the other Formula 2 rookies. Many of them have shown exciting pace and promise, but it takes a while to get up to speed.

“The potential has been here,” said Sargeant in the press conference after Baku. “But to deliver it has been extremely difficult. I feel like the lack of experience has hurt in some places.

“But I feel like I’m really starting to tick those boxes and get over those hurdles. I learned a massive lesson yesterday with Safety Cars and VSCs and also on the restarts. Then today, they were really good. So it’s stuff like that. You have to learn from it, have a short memory, and move on.”

Sargeant has been quick in 2022, namely in qualifying where there are less variables than in a race. He has qualified in the top ten in all but two rounds, Jeddah and Monaco being the exceptions.

As he mentioned, starts, restarts, and safety cars have proved more of a problem. In Imola he qualified tenth and started the Sprint Race from reverse grid pole. But a poor start saw him slip all the way back to sixth.

coming together

For Sargeant, it’s been a matter of being patient during the learning curve and doing what he can to score good points. Because of how fast he’s been, he spoke in the press conference after his second place in Baku about how it took longer than expected to get to that place.

“It did take longer than expected, not because I thought it would come easily but because we’ve thrown a couple away early on in the season. It sort of feels like it’s been a long time coming, but this has been a difficult weekend. I had to work hard to find my feet on Friday, and as Dennis [Hauger] said, I’ve still been progressing throughout the weekend. So as a rookie to come here and be on the Feature Race podium, it feels good.”

After Baku, Sargeant is not only the highest placed rookie in the standings. He’s also an impressive fourth overall, less than 20 points behind Jehan Daruvala.

Formula 2 is now six rounds into a 14 round championship. There’s time for anything to happen, but the top contenders have now presented themselves. With his first Feature Race podium, Sargeant has put himself forward as a contender for the rookie of the year title, as well as a potential top five placement in the championship.
