How it happened

The first flying laps were set five minutes into the thirty-minute session. ART Grand Prix drivers Theo Pourchaire and Victor Martins were the first to the top – but they didn’t hold it for long. Provisional pole position was passed around before Carlin’s Enzo Fittipaldi held it with a 1:24.511.

Jack Doohan was next to take the top spot, going almost half a second faster than Fittipaldi. As drivers completed their first set of push laps, the championship leader Frederik Vesti and his PREMA Racing teammate Oliver Bearman still hadn’t set a time.

The PREMA cars didn’t get out to set a fast lap until almost halfway through the session, Vesti managing eighth and Bearman getting up to fourth on the timing sheets.

With less than 15 minutes still to go, Dennis Hauger held the top spot as the only driver yet in the 1:23s range. As Hauger went out again to improve on his time, he was impeded by Pourchaire on a slow lap, and race control noted the incident.

Unhappy about that incident but still happy with his lap time, Hauger got out of the car to wait out the rest of the session.

But he didn’t stay on provisional pole for long after that, with first Pourchaire and then Fittipaldi topping his time. Hauger slipped to third overall behind those two drivers and ahead of Martins and Doohan.

Final runs

Fittipaldi held the provisional pole with a 1:23.623, as drivers came out on track for one last chance at grabbing the top spot.

At first, it looked like no one could beat out Fittipaldi, as Ayumu Iwasa only managed second place. Then Bearman, having missed out on the first half of the session, set the fastest time in sectors 1 and 2.

Bearman took his second pole position in Formula 2 in the final moments of the session by 0.077s over Fittipaldi. Vesti only managed eighth place, as Doohan claimed third place.

That put Iwasa in fourth place ahead of Pourchaire, who is currently under investigation for impeding Hauger, who finished in sixth. Martins was seventh ahead of Vesti, Jak Crawford, and Amaury Cordeel, who will start on pole in the Sprint Race tomorrow.
