Campos Racing driver Olli Caldwell is unable to compete in Spa after being handed a race ban for accumulating 12 penalty points over the season so far. Caldwell was handed the ban in Hungary after receiving his 12th penalty point for track limit violations.

This, therefore, left Campos with an empty seat for the weekend. Taking Caldwell’s seat in Spa is Lirim Zendeli.

Speaking on his return to Formula 2, Zendeli commented:

“I’m very excited and happy to be racing a Formula 2 car again. “It’s been a year now since my last time in F2 and I’m looking forward to this experience.”

He went on to add that “Spa has been good to me last time I drove there in Formula 3 winning the Feature Race.”

Zendeli concluded by saying:

“Taking over the keys from Olli will be a big challenge but I will try my best to find the limits again as soon as possible. I also want to thank Olli and Campos for their trust in me and I’ll give it my all to return it in good results.”

Adrian Campos also commented on the move. He said that “after the last sanction imposed by the FIA, unfortunately, we cannot have Olli with us in this race.” The Team Principal added:

“Zendeli comes in his place and I wish him a very good weekend, we know he has been out for a year but we hope he will have a quick adaptation to the car and I think that with all the support of the team we can have a good weekend.”

Season so far

Spa is set to be the first time Zendeli will step into an F2 car since leaving MP Motorsport. His F2 career was just short just before the end of the 2021 season due to funding issues.

Zendeli previously filled the vacant seat at Charouz Racing System. He filled in for both Aryton Simmons and David Schumacher in Formula 3. He competed during round three, where he finished P20 in the Sprint Race and P15 in the Feature Race.

Ralph Boschung

Another driver announcement was made for Campos today. The team confirmed the return of Ralph Boschung to their line-up.

Spa will mark Boschung’s return to F2 after a very rocky start to the season. After suffering from neck pain throughout the season and missing several races, Boschung was diagnosed with severe facet syndrome. This is an arthritis-like condition that can cause pain in the neck.

Robert Merhi had filled in for Boschung, but Merhi won’t be racing this weekend as Boschung returns.

Formula 2 returns this weekend (26th-28th August) for round 11 at Spa-Francorchamps.
