After the bright lights of the Las Vegas Grand Prix, we have reached the 2023 Formula One season finale. At the start of the year, McLaren was one of two teams that failed to score any points in the two opening rounds in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. Now, the papaya team is set to fight it out with Aston Martin for a well-deserved P4 in the constructors’ championship.

McLaren leads Aston Martin by 11 points, but who will come out on top?

After his heavy crash at the Las Vegas Grand Prix, McLaren’s Lando Norris will be hoping for a better weekend. During Thursday’s media day, Norris was asked about his podium chances at the season finale. He told Sky Sports F1:

“Yeah, I mean, I hope so. It’s always been a track that I’ve liked and enjoyed. I still prefer the old track to the new one, but I normally always perform well here. The car’s always been decent here.”

He concluded, “I think we can have a good one [race]. I would love to end the season on a high and with a podium, so that’s our goal.”

Oscar Piastri expects to be “much more competitive” in Abu Dhabi

Matching his teammate’s enthusiasm, Piastri also has high hopes for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Discussing the final race, and comparing it to Vegas, the Australian told formula1.com:

“I think we should be much more competitive [in Abu Dhabi]. I think, being a new circuit, at a drag range that we’ve struggled at through the year, we knew it would be a tough one for us [in Las Vegas].”

He continued, “I think the pace we had in the race was much more representative of what we had available through the whole weekend. We just got a few things wrong, in qualifying in particular, so that [finishing P10] was a decent way to end the weekend. I think we should be more competitive here than that, hopefully, and hopefully we can be fighting back at the front properly.”

Piastri was also asked about McLaren’s chances of securing P4 in the constructors’ championship ahead of Aston Martin. Naturally, the Aussie was positive about his team’s chances, saying:

“Yeah, I think definitely. I think we’ve got the pace to be able to do it.”

He continued, “But we still have to go out there and do our job and get the most out of what we’ve got. Hopefully, we can be quick, fighting well and truly at the front. And then a result will take care of itself.”
