Presenting on the Spanish version of DAZN, Lobato was speaking to his co-presenters, former F1 race engineer Toni Cuquerella and Formula 1 driver Pedro de la Rosa.

Commenting on the recent Japanese Grand Prix dominated by Championship leader Max Verstappen, the presenters joked about Red Bull’s dominance of the 2023 season.

Cuquerella remarked: “Let Adrian Newey be shaking because Antonio Lobato is coming!”, to which Lobato replied: “Let Michael be shaking! Well… not Michael, he cannot shake.”

He is no doubt referring to seven-time Drivers’ Champion Michael Schumacher, who many regard as one of the greatest to ever grace the world of Formula 1. The 54-year-old suffered life-altering injuries while skiing on holiday back in 2013, and hasn’t been seen in the public eye since.

Users on social media were quick to demand Lobato’s immediate firing from his role at DAZN, with one user exclaiming: “Using someone’s medical condition as the punchline of a joke is unacceptable and abhorrent. Michael is beloved and respected in this sport and [Antonio Lobato] doesn’t deserve the platform he is given by DAZN and F1.”

Updates surrounding Schumacher’s condition are few and far between, with his wife Corinna admitting that her husband is noticeably “different” in large part due to damage to his brain.

She said on the Netflix documentary Schumacher: “Michael is here. Different, but he’s here, and that gives us strength, I find.”

“We’re together. We live together at home… do therapy… do everything we can to make Michael better and to make sure he’s comfortable. And to simply make him feel our family, our bond. And no matter what, I will do everything I can. We all will.”

Controversy surrounding Michael Schumacher

This is not the first time that controversy surrounds the use of Michael Schumacher’s name.

Schumacher’s family pressed charges against German publication Die Aktuelle after they released a fake AI interview with the Champion.

The newspaper has a history of wrongdoings against the Schumacher family. A publication back in 2014 titled “Awake” showed a picture of Michael and wife Corinna on the front page, when the article itself only explored the possibility of people waking up from deep comas.

Then in 2015 the Schumacher family took the German magazine to court over yet another headline implying that Michael’s wife Corinna had found a “new love”. Only upon reading the article did one find out that it was referring to their daughter, Gina.

On the receiving end of all the grief has been Michael’s son, Mercedes F1 reserve driver Mick Schumacher. Mick has stated how much he misses talking to his father, and once said: “I think dad and me, we would understand each other in a different way now.”

“Simply because we speak a similar language, the language of motorsport. And we would have so much more to talk about. That’s where my head is most of the time. Thinking that it would be cool that would be. I would give up everything just for that.”

With this in mind, many find it difficult to accept any form of disrespect towards Michael Schumacher, including Antonio Lobato’s recent comment on live TV. We await a response from DAZN regarding the next course of action.
