The most races Lewis Hamilton has gone in Formula 1 without winning is ten. The British Grand Prix this year could make it 11.

The seven time world champion is on a streak of ten winless races, not having won since Saudi Arabia 2021. This has happened three times before, in 2009, 2013, and 2014.. If Hamilton doesn’t win the next race out, he’ll break that record and mark the longest time he’s ever gone without winning a race in Formula 1.

the first two times

Hamilton won the Chinese Grand Prix in 2008, the penultimate race of the season. Finishing fifth in the final race and clinching his first world title, that was the beginning of the longest winless streak of his career (so far).

Hamilton was disqualified from the first race of the 2009 season, not an ideal start for the reigning champion. His best result during that winless streak would come in Bahrain, four races into the season. He finished fourth, making up one place from qualifying.

He then went five races without scoring any points, before finally achieving the elusive win at the Hungarian Grand Prix. It was the tenth race of the season, and the longest Hamilton has ever gone into a season without winning a race.

The second and third times he went ten races without a win was actually back to back, in 2013 and 2014. Oddly enough, it was a very similar situation to the last time. Hamilton won the penultimate race of the 2012 season, the United States Grand Prix. He then retired in the season finale, and again went the first nine races of the 2013 season without managing a win.

After taking victory at the tenth race of the 2013, season, the Hungarian Grand Prix, Hamilton went another ten races without winning again. The Hungarian Grand Prix was Hamilton’s only race win that season, making it the only season he failed to win more than once (so far).

Finally Hamilton won the second race of the 2014 season, and didn’t look back, at least, until now. The 2022 Canadian Grand Prix marked his tenth race without a win, and now an 11th is on the cards.

could Hamilton win the British Grand Prix?

The pattern this time around is oddly similar to before, with Hamilton winning the penultimate race of the 2021 season, and then going ten races without a win. But will he able able to break the streak like he has before?

Hamilton has won at the Silverstone circuit a total of eight times, more than any other driver has. It’s his favorite circuit, and his home race. If there’s any race he would want to win, it’s here. If there’s any race he’s able to win, it’s this one.

But it’s not as easy as that. The Mercedes team has been struggling this season, and although George Russell has pulled it into the top five every single race so far, it’s not an easy car to drive.

Hamilton has good momentum coming off of a podium in Montreal, but with the fast Red Bulls and Ferraris fighting for the title, as well as a competent teammate to contend with, it looks likely that this will be the time that he turns that winless streak into 11. Of course, anything can (and will) happen in Formula 1, and if there’s a driver you should never count out, it’s Sir Lewis Hamilton.
