Silly season is in full swing but this time it’s involving team principals of Formula One teams. Earlier this week it was announced that Williams’ Team Principal Jost Capito would be departing the team.

This news came as a shock but today’s news of Fred Vasseur switching teams has been rumoured for a while. After Mattia Binotto’s exit from Ferrari was announced, Vasseur was the most likely name to move to Ferrari.

Today, Alfa Romeo confirmed Vasseur’s departure from the Swiss team after six years of working there. The Frenchman began working at Sauber back in 2017, helping them secure Alfa Romeo as a title sponsor. Most recently, Vasseur was key in getting Audi to enter Formula 1 in time for the new regulations in 2026 with Sauber as their factory team.

Goodbye to Vasseur

Having played a key role within Alfa Romeo, Vasseur said:

“I can look back fondly at these six years together, I owe a debt of gratitude to every single employee of the team, as they are the ones who got this team back on their feed and climbing the ladder of our sport.

“I am proud of the job we collectively have done as a team and a company, and even more so of the strong foundations we have laid for what’s to come next: but what I am the proudest of is the people that made this all possible, which in time have become friends.”

This year Alfa Romeo finished sixth in the Constructors’ Championship and Vasseur is confident that the team will continue to go upwards. He said:

“I know Alfa Romeo F1 Team ORLEN will keep going from strength to strength. I’m looking forward to seeing them compete at the business end of the grid in the next few years.”

Goodbye Alfa Romeo, Hello Ferrari

Ferrari announced Vasseur would be joining the team, just after his departure from Alfa Romeo. Mattia Binotto left the Scuderia earlier this month after the 2022 season ended.

Vasseur will be joining the Italian team as Team Principal and will begin his role at the new team from January 2023. Ferrari shared the announcement of Vasseur’s arrival and commented on his “25 years of winning motor racing experience”.

Speaking on his new position, Vasseur said:

“I am truly delighted and honoured to take over the leadership of Scuderia Ferrari as Team Principal. As someone who has always held a lifelong passion for motorsport, Ferrari has always represented the very pinnacle of the racing world to me.

“I look forward to working with the talented and truly passionate team in Maranello to honour the history and heritage of the Scuderia and deliver for our Tifosi around the world.”

Ferrari had an unfortunate season, missing out on the Drivers’ Title this year. But Vasseur brings over 25 years of motorsport experience to the team.

Benedetto Vigna, CEO of Ferrari, said the team are “delighted to welcome Fred Vasseur.” He continued saying:

“Throughout his career, he has successfully combined his technical strengths as a trained engineer with a consistent ability to bring out the best in his drivers and team. This approach and his leadership are what we need to push Ferrari forward with renewed energy.”

Replacement at Alfa Romeo

With Vasseur having left Alfa Romeo and Sauber, reports are now saying Andreas Seidl will take over. Seidl is currently McLaren’s Team Principal.

Seidl has worked at McLaren for four years, but now he could be set to make the move to Alfa Romeo. His move to the Swiss outfit would see him lead their transition to Audi entering F1 in 2026.

However, this news is yet to be confirmed and at the moment is just speculation.
