Daniel Ricciardo will be returning to Formula 1 this season as AlphaTauri have decided to part ways with Nyck de Vries.

Daniel Ricciardo has been a much-loved figure of the Formula 1 paddock over the years and many were sad to see the Australian leave the sport at the end of last year. He had raced with McLaren for two years but was let go after McLaren decided to opt for Oscar Piastri for the 2023 season.

However, now Ricciardo is set to join the grid once again.

Nyck de Vries debuted in Formula 1 this year with AlphaTauri. The former Formula E champion has, unfortunately, been unable to impress AlphaTauri and those in charge at Red Bull.

11 rounds into the 2023 season and De Vries is one of only two drivers to have yet to score a point – the other being Logan Sargeant. De Vries’ highest finishing position was P12 in Monaco, but he has failed to get into the top 10 at any race weekend, which his teammate, Yuki Tsunoda, has achieved twice.

Last month, Helmut Marko announced that De Vries would have the four rounds from Silverstone to Spa to impress and prove that he can perform well enough to keep his seat. It was also reported that Christian Horner, Team Principal of Red Bull, wasn’t a fan of de Vries joining AlphaTauri.

Reports were coming out earlier today that De Vries had sadly lost his F1 seat. However, AlphaTauri hadn’t confirmed anything so the news was not official.

Ricciardo confirmed to return

But now, AlphaTauri have confirmed Ricciardo as De Vries’ replacement starting from the next race weekend.

Ricciardo will be “on loan” from Red Bull to AlphaTauri and will begin racing next weekend in Hungary, which is the 12th round of the season.

In a press release by AlphaTauri, Franz Tost, the Team Principal commented on Ricciardo joining the team. Tost said:

“I’m very pleased to welcome Daniel back into the team. There’s no doubt about his driving skill, and he already knows many of us, so his integration will be easy and straight-forward.

“The team will also profit a lot from his experience, as he is an eight-time Formula 1 Grand Prix winner. I would like to thank Nyck for his valuable contribution  during his time with Scuderia AlphaTauri, and I wish him all the best for the future.”

Ricciardo also expressed his excitement at returning to F1. The Australian said:

“I’m stoked to be back on track with the Red Bull family!”

This news comes on the day that Ricciardo completed a Pirelli Tyre Test for Red Bull at Silverstone. Christian Horner, Team Principal of Red Bull, praised Ricciardo and said that Red Bull are “excited” to see what he can do at AlphaTauri. Horner’s comments were:

“It is great to see Daniel hasn’t lost any form while away from racing and that the strides he has been making in his SIM sessions translate on track. His times during the tyre test were extremely competitive. It was a very impressive drive and we are excited to see what the rest of the season brings for Daniel on loan at Scuderia AlphaTauri.”

Ricciardo will partner Yuki Tsunoda for the remaining races of the 2023 season.

  1. I was prepared for an in-season change but didn’t expect that to happen before the summer break.
Nevertheless, Ricciardo for the remaining season is an unsurprising choice.
However, hopefully, he’d only be an interim choice with Lawson becoming a full-time driver from next season’s beginning, as otherwise, the driver program wouldn’t really serve any purpose anymore.
