BWT Alpine announced today that Oscar Piastri will be racing for them, partnering with Esteban Ocon next season. The team released their statement on Twitter confirming the driver line-up.

However, that press release did not include a statement from the Australian driver himself. Since then, Piastri has released his own statement on social media.

His statement said that what Alpine released was done so “without [his] agreement.” He continued to say that he “will not be driving for Alpine next year.”

With Piastri denying Alpine’s claim as joining their F1 driver line-up next year, that leaves the seat open, despite Otmar Szafnauer saying that the former F2 champion is their “number one preferred candidate” to replace Alonso.

Piastri and McLaren

Mark Webber, Piastri’s manager, has reportedly been looking at the young Australian moving to McLaren for 2023. Piastri was made available to the Woking team earlier this year as a reserve driver.

Now that Piastri has denied all claims that he will race for Alpine next year, it opens speculation as to whether he will go to McLaren. But, if Piastri does move to McLaren then it begs the question as to what will happen to Daniel Ricciardo.

Ricciardo’s future was under fire earlier this season. In response to rumours, he released a statement on his social media confirming his “commitment” to McLaren. Ricciardo made his announcement the day after McLaren signed Alex Palou to their racing group.

Szafnauer’s Comments on Piastri and McLaren reported that Otmar Szafnauer, however, was not aware of any “pre-arrangements [Piastri] has with McLaren, if any at all.” He said what he does know is the Australian “does have contractual obligations” to the team.

He continued saying those obligations “last through ’23, and possibly in ’24.” Szafnauer added that “Oscar and his camp are considering their options, whatever that means.” Szafnauer also expressed that:

“There shouldn’t be any complications. If everyone is true to the agreements that they signed back only a few months ago, we should be able to move forward with the agreements that we have in place.”

McLaren and Chip Ganassi

When McLaren signed Palou, it was after Chip Ganassi Racing, Palou’s current team, announced he would be remaining with them for 2023. However, Palou quickly denied that that was true.

Piastri’s situation with Alpine echoes the above with a statement from the team confirming a 2023 drive with the driver soon denying it.
