Latest Episode | Cut To The Race Podcast

Lando Norris has signed a four-year extension with McLaren, taking the 22-year-old through to the end of 2025.

The new deal means that Norris has the longest contract on the grid and ties the rising star to the team which brought him into Formula 1 as they aim to return to the front of the grid in the sport’s new era.

McLaren announced via Twitter that Norris had ‘signed on the dotted line’, committing to a new four-year deal beginning in 2022.

In the official statement, Norris said: “Teams are about people, and I love the people and feel at home at McLaren.

“I have grown up in this team and I’m part of this journey we’re all on. Last season was another great step, both in my career and the team’s performance, and I see and feel all the work, investment, and commitment for the team to be in a position to challenge for wins and titles in the future.

“This all gives me huge confidence looking forward, so it was a natural decision to extend our relationship for the next few years.”

Norris, who achieved a career-best sixth in last year’s drivers’ standings, was signed up by McLaren in 2017 at the age of 17 after impressing during a test in Hungary.

The eight-time constructors’ champions will be pleased to tie their star driver up for the foreseeable future, with rumours swirling of interest from other teams after Norris’s impressive performances in 2021.

Team Principal Andreas Seidl said:

“The opportunity to extend our relationship with Lando reflects not only our commitment but our belief and confidence in his talent.

“It is also a strong sign of trust and commitment from Lando in us as a team and our journey to world championship
contention.”

McLaren has also extended the contracts of Seidl, CEO Zak Brown and “the entire leadership team”, which are seen as going “hand in hand” with Norris’s new deal.

Driver and team will begin their joint adventure into Formula 1’s new era at pre-season testing in Bahrain later this month, with the new car being launched on Friday.
