Hamilton and compatriot teammate George Russell have signed similar contract extensions with Mercedes, ensuring the pair will remain together for another two years.

This latest news puts to bed various rumours surrounding the future of Hamilton, with plenty of speculation around a potential retirement and a sensational switch to rival team Scuderia Ferrari.

Talks had been ongoing for several months between the multiple World Champion and Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff, with the latter insisting that a new contract was a high possibility but negotiations were “uncomfortable” between “two friends”.

Russell’s future at Mercedes always seemed more assured, with the Briton performing well against a formidable teammate and opponent since his debut for the team back in 2022.

2023 so far has seen a downtick in form for Mercedes. Despite sitting second in the Constructors’ Championship, they find themselves down on performance and results compared to runaway leaders Red Bull, who have been helped by the dominance of Max Verstappen.

Words from the drivers and the Team Principal

Hamilton is excited to continue with the Brackley-based outfit. He said: “I’m grateful to the team who have supported me both on and off the track. Our story isn’t finished, we are determined to achieve more together and we won’t stop until we do.”

“We have never been hungrier to win. We have learnt from every success but also every setback. We continue to chase our dreams, we continue to fight no matter the challenge and we will win again.”

Russell is excited to see and aid in the progress of Mercedes back to winning ways. He added: “We have made some significant steps over the last 18 months and are only getting stronger as a team. I’m excited to help continue to build on that momentum as we progress into 2024 and 2025 as we continue to focus on returning to the very front of the pack.”

Toto Wolff believes that continuing with their current driver lineup was a simple decision to make. The Mercedes Team Principal said: “Continuing with our current driver line-up was a straightforward decision.”

“We have the strongest pairing on the grid and both drivers are playing a crucial role in the team to move us forward. The strength and stability they provide will be key building blocks for our future success.”
