Hamilton almost took the race victory but had to settle for P2 on the road, after strategy confusion at Mercedes. Despite starting from pole, Leclerc quickly fell back and ultimately suffered on the slower one-stop approach. However, that was for nought, as the two drivers’ cars fell short in scrutineering.

The pair were found to have excessively worn wooden planks beneath their cars – for which the penalty is usually disqualification. This came following a post-race physical floor and plank wear inspection. Both were found to be not in compliance with FIA technical regulations.

As confirmed by FIA Technical Delegate Jo Bauer’s report: “A physical floor and a plank wear inspection was carried out on car numbers 16 and 44. “The skids located in the area -825 ≥ XR ≥ – 1025 are found to be not in compliance with Article 3.5.9. e) of the 2023 F1 Technical Regulations. ”

Random checks following a grand prix are standard practice in F1. Both Max Verstappen and Lando Norris had their cars checked as well.

What does this mean for the rest of the field?

The change in classified results brings some surprise points scorers, such as Yuki Tsunoda going from two points (for P10 and fastest lap) to five. Perhaps more notably, Logan Sargeant has now scored his first F1 point, finishing in P10 at one of his three home races this season.

It also promotes Carlos Sainz to the podium, with Lando Norris inheriting P2. The other Williams of Alex Albon takes two points for P9.

Hamilton and Leclerc won’t have to wait long for a chance of redemption. F1 heads to Mexico next, before ending the current triple-header with the Sao Paulo Grand Prix.
