Bottas: “Fifth constructors’ title is a goal”

Latest Episode | Cut To The Race Podcast

Even though Valtteri Bottas will be driving for Alfa Romeo next year, his loyalty and motivation is currently still with Mercedes.

With only a five-point lead in the constructors’ championship over Red Bull, Mercedes enters the last two races of this season.

Bottas, who will no longer drive for the Silver Arrows from 2022, believes those chances to win the title together with Lewis Hamilton for the team are good. He is motivated by his current team and wants to win a fifth title in a row with them:

“[A] fifth [Constructors’ title] together in a row would be something really special to be a part of. [It] would be better than four, so that’s definitely a goal, and it’s also a motivation for me to keep pushing.”

He sees the claim that he is finished with Mercedes quite differently:

“Even though I know I’m leaving, I’m still not giving up on any goals and what we have for this year.”

But Bottas also feels good about the outlook for the future. Together with Guanyu Zhou, he will make up the line-up for Alfa Romeo. Bottas admits that although he hasn’t actually met his future teammate yet, he is quite happy to be working with him:

“[I’m] looking forward to working with him. I don’t know him yet as a person that well, not sure I’ve ever properly met him, but I’ve obviously seen him around in the F2. He’s been there for some years and this year, in particular, did some good races, and [he’s had] good results and good consistency.”

Alfa Romeo will be the only team to completely renew their driver line-up next season. Kimi Räikönnen is saying goodbye to Formula 1 after 20 years. Antonio Giovinazzi is also leaving F1 to join Dragon/Penske Autosport in Formula E.
