F2 Driver Profile: Felipe Drugovich

Latest Episode | Cut To The Race Podcast

Felipe Drugovich is in his third season of Formula 2 and is currently leading the championship. Two rounds in and the Brazilian has already been a polesitter and a race winner.

Early Years

Like most drivers, Drugovich began karting before transitioning to single seaters. He raced in ADAC Formula 4 for the 2016 season. That year he finished 12th in the standings having scored one podium, and he switched teams to join Vans Amersfoort Racing for his second season.

His second season of ADAC Formula 4 was much more respectable, as he finished third in the championship. Taking seven wins (more than any other driver that season) put Drugovich right behind Juri Vips and Marcus Armstrong in the final standings.

In 2017-18 Drugovich took three separate titles: MRF Challenge Formula 2000, Euroformula Open, and Spanish Formula 3. The most dominant of these was his Euroformula Open campaign. Racing with RP Motorsport, Drugovich took the title by almost 200 points over Bent Viscaal. Along the way, he won all but two of the 16 races.

Riding the high of three championship titles, Drugovich moved up to Formula 3 with Carlin Buzz Racing. He finished the 2019 season a depressing 16th in the standings, albeit ahead of both of his teammates.

Formula 2

Despite missing out on results in Formula 3, Drugovich found a Formula 2 seat with MP Motorsport for 2020. Here he would make moves from the start, winning the first Sprint Race of the season at the Red Bull Ring. He took another Sprint Race win in Spain, but his best weekend wouldn’t come until Sakhir.

At the first race weekend in Bahrain, Drugovich qualified second and took a dominant victory in the Feature Race the next day. He finished in the points again in the Sprint Race, and these valuable points would give him ninth place overall in the final standings.

For 2021, Drugovich switched to the UNI-Virtuosi team, alongside Guanyu Zhou. This campaign proved to be somewhat disappointing for him, as he struggled to fight at the top. While Zhou was a title contender and finished third in the standings, Drugovich only finished eighth, with no wins to his name.

While he made a step up in the standings, it wasn’t the season Drugovich had dreamed of, and so he went back to the MP Motorsport team for his third season in Formula 2.

Leading the 2022 Championship

Drugovich qualified tenth in the first weekend of the 2022 season, meaning he started Saturday’s Sprint Race from pole position. But he fell back after a slow start, and only finished fifth. But starting tenth on Sunday he gained positions and finished fifth again.

After a disappointing but consistent weekend for Drugovich, Formula 2 went to Saudi Arabia for the second round. Here, the Brazilian driver scored his first ever pole position in Friday’s Qualifying session. He managed to finish fourth in the chaotic Sprint Race, but a post-race penalty for Jake Hughes promoted him to the podium.

Of course, he started the Feature Race on pole, and went on to win, taking the championship lead for the first time in his Formula 2 career.

After Round 2 of the championship, Drugovich leads Carlin’s Liam Lawson by 11 points in the standings. While Hitech leads the Teams’ Championship, MP Motorsport is only three points behind them. In a competitive season of Formula 2, several title contenders have already emerged throughout the first four races. Now, in his third season of the championship, it’s Drugovich’s title to lose.
